MAP PAINTINGS - Paintings for people who love wilderness.livepages::jquery();?>
My map paintings came about by a series of explorations; reading maps to find my way in unfamiliar terrain, it was a short leap to using them as a surface to paint on. I choose old maps that have seen some use, that people have taken with them to explore the landscape or plan, perhaps dream of trips into the same kinds of places that I'm drawn to. That sense of history along with the textures and colours of the map add a different dimension to the finished painting. The map is bonded to a wood panel and then primed with two coats of clear acrylic primer before I add the marks depicting my experience of a place.
